Visual Art

Art is a fundamental dimension of human life. Throughout history the Visual Arts have given form and meaning to ideas, feelings and provides ways for people to express and communicate with each other.

The early years of three to six allows for the development of the student's visual language, exploration and experimentation in a wide range of media and technique. At Serpentine Jarrahdale Grammar School students from year three and up have a specialist teacher in Visual Art. Students from years three to six have one lesson of visual art a week in a specialist room which is equipped with materials to cater for this subject.

The continuing engagement in manipulating materials, processes and evaluating artworks supports students in years seven to eight to develop personal responses, encourage problem solving skills and lays the foundation for technical accomplishment. From years seven up students have four lessons a week of Visual Art a week which progresses into Senior School where we offer VET Art and Design Certificate 2 and ATAR Visual Arts.

Visual Art within year nine and ten assists students to value and develop confidence in their own creative abilities and create an understanding of their environment, community and culture. The Visual Arts course engages students in a process that helps develop motivation, self esteem, discipline, collaborative practice and initiative, all of which are essential life skills.

We introduce a broad range of art experiences including drawing, painting, printing, textiles that develop students' manipulatives kills through clear sequential projects. These projects are developed around themes – the human form, environment, natural world, abstract, cultures, still life.

Visual Art aims to contribute to a sense of enjoyment, engagement and fulfillment in the student's everyday lives as well as promote an appreciation of the world around them.

We are also involved in co curricular where students have the opportunity to get involved in extension classes and learning materials outside the classroom. We also enter a number of competitions and exhibitions throughout the year.
