Italian is one of the largest language communites in Australia and Italians have highly influenced the Australian culture in many different ways. Today, there are many Australian businesses which trade with Italy, many Italians travel to Australia for leisure and work and Italy is a popular European destination for Australians when travelling.

Languages is the area of curriculum where students develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to communicate effectively and appropriately in another language. At SJGS the study of Italian is compulsory in Years 7 and 8. It is during these two years that cognitive skills in a second language are established in each learner. Classes are interactive and focus on a range of communication tasks.

In Year 9 and 10 the study of a second language becomes an elective subject and students learning Italian have the opportunity to progress and increase their knowledge of the language. In Years 11 and 12 students are able to reach an advanced level of competence as Italian is taught as an ATAR subject.

Effective second language study not only enhances the understanding of foreign people, culture, history and communication style and social paradigm but also fosters student's social development and confidence.

The study of a second language has positive effects within English as it increases the appreciation and understanding of grammar and structure of the language.

The major outcomes of learning Italian are:

  1. Listening and responding
  2. Viewing, reading and responding
  3. Structure of the target language
  4. Writing
  5. Speaking and responding
  6. Cultural understanding

A series of enrichment activities are organised for students learning Italian which include: multicultural day, excursions and visiting speakers. Students have also the chance of hosting an Italian student or a teacher assistant which benefits the acquisition of Italian and increases student's acceptance and understanding towards a different culture.
